New York Yankees rookie Clint Frazier has impressed with his bat of late. His mental lapses, however, leave a lot to be desired.
This season, after losing just about every outfielder on the team, the New York Yankees found an opportunity to whip out their shiny new toy, a 24-year-old prospect who’s been highly touted for his amazing bat speed and flashy red hair. I’m talking about none other than Clint Frazier. In fact, during an 18-game stretch from April 2 – April 22, Frazier had 6 home runs, 17 RBI, and was slashing .324 / .342 / .632.

Then, the unthinkable happened: Frazier himself was placed on the 10-day IL with a left ankle sprain. While he didn’t miss as much time as Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton have missed, when he returned 10-days later, he wasn’t the same player.
In 23 games since returning from the IL, Frazier has played in 23 games and has only been able to hit 4 home runs, 11 RBI, and is slashing .228 / .299 / .418. Not only that, but he has had some, let’s call it, “mental lapses” on the field that have left some fans wondering if his multiple concussions in 2018 have affected his judgment on some level.
The latest example(s) of this came in Sunday’s game against the Boston Red Sox. Let’s start with the 7th inning.

First, he allows a short-hop off the bat of Eduardo Nunez to get past him in right field, scoring Michael Chavis and allowing Nunez to go to third base. This extended the Red Sox lead over the Yankees to 4-2. Then, instead of fielding a line drive off the bat of Andrew Benintendi on a clean hop, he makes an ill-informed attempt to make a diving catch. This allows Brock Holt to score from first, extending the Sox lead over the Yanks to 5-2.
It doesn’t end there. Later in the game, after leading off in the bottom of the 9th, Frazier is able to move to second base on a throwing error when this happened:
Analyzing video from #Yankees #RedSox on Sunday and I’m puzzled. Why didn’t Clint Frazier just take 3rd? The Sox were literally giving it to him? #PinstripePride #DirtyWater pic.twitter.com/pG6bhKtN68

It’ll be interesting to see what the Yankees do with Clint Frazier moving forward. While he remains a valuable part of this team, mental lapses such as these just can’t happen on a big league field.
