For the third consecutive month the top three teams continue to be the Red Sox, Astros, and Yankees. While the Red Sox appear to be running away with it, they still face off against the Yankees 11 more times this season and Chris Sale was placed on the DL today. The Astros, having lost Altuve to the DL earlier this week, have lost five straight and are playing in a surprisingly competitive division.
The biggest jump of the month were the Los Angeles Dodgers who went from being ranked NINTH in the month June to the FIVE spot this month. They’ve accomplished this feat by having the EIGHTH best record in the by the end of July. Also, they ranked FIFTH in Rdiff by the end of July, compared to NINTH by the end of June.
The biggest drop goes to the Atlanta Braves who after being ranked FOURTH last month are not even ranked this month. For the month of July, the Atlanta Braves were one of the worst teams in baseball with a record of 10-13. The Braves failed to make any moves at the trade deadline to improve their team, but given the gluttony of young talent on the team and the fact that they’re a year ahead of schedule, that they have the best Rdiff in the NL East is a win already.
Finally, the Oakland A’s have joined the mix by finishing the month of July with a 62-46 record, the SIXTH best record in baseball. They’re also scoring lots of runs, having the 10th best Rdiff in baseball. The A’s also didn’t add any major pieces at the deadline, but their team is stacked with young talent and are looking to overtake the M’s this season.
