Top 10 MLB Hitters: Volume 1, 7/23 – 8/1

MLB Hitters

With the season finally underway, which MLB Hitters have gotten off to fast starts? Using our system, here’s who we think are the Top 10 hitters in MLB.

Nearly two weeks into the 2020 season, we’re ready to deliver the first volume of the Top 10 MLB Hitters for the dates July 23 – August 2. To make our determinations, we utilized a 10-point rubric using five essential advanced stats that can be found on FanGraphs: OPS, wRAA, wOBA, wRC+, and WPA.

Utilizing a 10-point system and using only players with at least 30 plate appearances, we collected data for 142 MLB hitters. Then, to determine the ranking, we calculated the range for each data point.

  • OPS: 1.343 – 0.212 = 1.131
  • wRAA: 7.0 – -5.5 = 12.5
  • wOBA: 0.552 – 0.114 = 0.438
  • wRC+: 254 – -33 = 287
  • WPA = 1.57 – -0.80 = 2.37

After calculating the range for each data set, we determined the value for each point with one being the lowest and 10 being the greatest. Here’s a visual rubric of our calculations:
