The ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective’ Review

“Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls” – directed by Steve Oedekerk; starring Jim Carrey, Ian McNeice, and Simon Callow; Warner Bros. and Morgan Creek

SCORE: B

‘When Nature Calls’ picks up where ‘Pet Detective’ left off. After solving the case of the kidnapped Miami Dolphins mascot, Ace Ventura sufferers a hiking accident in which he loses a pet.

This leads Ace into retirement deep in the Himalayas to do some soul-searching. Later, he is coaxed out of retirement for another adventure. This time he must rescue an endangered white bat — which he is deathly afraid of — from a small village in Africa.

‘When Nature Calls’ offers up far more memorable moments than ‘Pet Detective’ does. However, these moments are just as absurd as they were in the first film. Absurd moments only Jim Carrey can pull off and make… well enduring.

Moments like the battle between Ace Ventura and The Tiny Warrior (played by Tommy Davidson). Why is this scene so funny? Well, you’ll have to see for yourself.

If for nothing else, watch these films because Hollywood simply doesn’t make comedies like these anymore. It’s made it so that films like the Ace Ventura sequels feel more like classics rather than absurdist films of the 1990s.
