After the New York Knicks traded Kristaps Porzingis away to the Dallas Mavericks, they paved the way for two max contracts. With potentially one of the greatest groups of players set to become free agents, who should the Knicks go after?
The New York Knicks have been mired in one of the worst stretches in sports history. Having not won a championship since the 1972-1973 season, if not for the New York Jets, they’d have the longest current championship drought in the New York tristate area.
What’s worse, It’s been six years since the Knicks last made the postseason. That season, they were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Semis by the Indiana Pacers in six games.
That just so happens to be the furthest the team has gone in the postseason since the 1999-2000 season when they made it to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Throughout the years, the Knicks had plenty of opportunities to successfully rebuild the team. However, shoddy decisions from front offices throughout the years have served only to make the organization backward, not forward.
Knicks fans got a surprise last season, however, when management traded Kristaps Porzingis, once thought as the future of the franchise, to the Dallas Mavericks. Initially, experts and analysts welcomed this deal with unquestionable doubt and negativity. However, upon further review, the trade looks more like a new opportunity for the Knicks to try to set things right.
By trading KP to Dallas, the Knicks opened up enough salary space for the 2019-2020 season to acquire TWO max contracts. After losing out on the #1 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, the team will look to fill the roster with game-ready players that will take the team to the postseason.
Lucky for the Knicks, this upcoming free agent class happens to be one of the greatest in NBA history. Among those available are Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and Kawhi Leonard to name a few. So, it’ll be interesting to see who the Knicks decide to sign, or if they’d be willing to go far enough to sign a combination of those players.
