In an interview, Sony Pictures confirmed that Spider-Man: No Way Home will mark the starting point for Spidey’s arrival at Spider-Verse.
The iron rule with “Thor 4: Love and Thunder” and to a certain extent also with “Captain America 4” has already been overridden, but so far superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have received a maximum of three solo films before they had to make way for new Marvel characters.
The situation is similar with Spider-Man, currently played by Tom Holland: The friendly spider from the neighborhood has already received two solo films, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home” within the MCU, with “Spider-Man: No Way Home” follows part three on December 16, 2022 (German theatrical release). This almost fulfills his target, because, in contrast to the majority of Marvel superheroes, Spider-Man is a cooperation between Disney / Marvel Studios and the owner of the film rights, Sony Pictures.
The original contract provided for three solo films and three additional appearances in the MCU, with the option of an additional appearance. Holland’s Spidey made his debut in “The First Avenger: Civil War” and then appeared in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”. According to the current status, that leaves him with another MCU appearance – possibly in “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness”.

And then? What then follows for Holland’s Spider-Man? It is now definitely clear that it will be integrated into the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC), as the Spider-Verse from Sony Pictures is officially called. “No Way Home” is the starting signal for this. This was confirmed by Sanford Panitch, President of the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, in an interview with Variety :
“There is indeed a plan. I think it should be a lot clearer for people now where we’re headed, and I think even more will be revealed as soon as ‘No Way Home’ is released.”
It is already known that the multiverse is properly explored for the first time in “No Way Home”. The confirmed return of Spidey nemeses such as Doctor Otto Octavius alias Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) and Max Dillon alias Electro (Jamie Foxx) from older “Spider-Man” films also suggests that in addition to Hollands Spidey, the Spider-Men by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield could appear. However, this has so far been directly denied upon request and has not yet been officially confirmed. But it would have to go with the devil, should they really not be there after all the hints.
